A new study says men who take more than half the Viagra, Cialis or Levitra in a pill are at higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. But experts are worried that many of those who take the drugs may have serious side effects.
The findings came from a new study of men with Alzheimer’s who took a higher dose of the drug and a lower dose of the drug. Researchers say they found that men who take more than a quarter a million doses of the drug for a year are at even higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s.
“That’s the kind of drug that would be taken for years,” said, a professor of urology and an assistant professor at the University of Texas Southwestern. “And that would be far too high of a risk for people who are already taking their medications for a long time.”
The new findings are part of a larger study that looked at more than 1,000 patients who were taking the drug, or a combination of drugs, for a year.
The study, which followed more than 1,300 people who had been taking a similar drug for more than a year, found that over half of the patients were at even higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s than were those who were taking a single dose.
The results are published in the journal Alzheimer’s. A new study by scientists at the University of Texas Southwestern and Harvard Medical School in their study of over 1,000 people who took a low dose of the drug, called PEG5, and a higher dose of the drug called PEG6, has not yet been published in peer-reviewed journals.
The drug and PEG5 are used to treat erectile dysfunction, or impotence. They also are used in the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, or high blood pressure in the lungs.
Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia in the United States and accounts for about half of the cases. More than one-third of the men who take the drugs in their drugs experience the symptoms.
The drugs are sold over the counter. The drugs are sold at a much lower price than Viagra. They are sold in pharmacies and in a variety of medical stores.
Dr. David S. Leavitt, director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Prevention and Research Program at the National Institute of Mental Health, said that the study was the first to look at the impact of taking a high-dose drug on the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. “We were looking for something that would be taken for years,” Leavitt said. “That’s what we’re looking at.”
In this type of study, the researchers compared a group of patients who took one of the drugs for a year to those who didn’t take one of the drugs for the same year.
They found that men who took the drugs had about twice the chance of developing Alzheimer’s in the first year compared to those who didn’t take the drugs.
There were more men than women in the groups. “We found that those who took the drugs had about twice the chance of developing Alzheimer’s as those who didn’t,” Leavitt said.
